Custom mixing nail colours

Hi guys, I know its been a while since I updated the old blog! Naughty Gemma! Honestly though I've found over here its a lot easier to sit in front of the camera and quickly upload, blog posts tend to take more time, but I need to get out of this habit because I love writing on here and it took me an age to finish this site! I have still been uploading videos to my youtube channel and I have also started uploading regularly to my vlog channel where you can find 'day in the life' style video blogs where I take my camera out and about in Toulouse.

Okay, back to the matter at hand! I first considered mixing nail polish colours back in the day when I was thirteen years old and sat on my bedroom floor reading Just 17 magazine (ahh the memories!) Offering me a cautionary tale, Just 17 was warning me never to mix nail polishes in the bottle, because they were likely to explode and cause a nasty mess and perhaps bodily harm. Being the obedient teen that I was (I was no rebel child) the article put the fear of god into me and I pushed the thought of ever mixing my own nail colour to the back of my mind never to be considered again.

Cut to 2009, and my 24 year old self. I'm still not cool enough to be considered rebellious, but I was getting a little bit bored of the nail polishes that I brought to France with me and I felt like applying something new before I went on a night out. I was sent Metro Chic from the Sephora by OPI collection as a gift by the lovely lollipop26 and I absolutely love it, but I've worn it quite a lot recently and wanted to spice it up a little bit. Maybe the thought of Christmas was getting me a little excited but I was craving some glitter and sparkle.

Cue tinfoil. I decided to mix Metro Chic with my Eyeko disco polish, which is amazingly glittery. I had tried using the Eyeko polish as a top coat over other colours in the past, but the glitter is so concentrated that it completely blocks out the underneath colour. Not only that but something about the formulation over another colour completely stops your nails from drying. This is definitely a glitter polish best worn alone for glitzy silver nails.

I decided to use the brush from the Eyeko polish, as any remaining glitter left behind on the OPI brush would have ruined Metro Chic. Before I started I lightly wiped the brush on a paper towel so there wasn't as much glitter (honestly this polish is so concentrated) but some product still remained. Then I poured out some of the metro chic onto a piece of tinfoil. Easy to throw away afterwards.

I then swirled the Eyeko brush around a little bit to make a fab glittery colour which looked like this.

You probably have enough time to apply one coat without rushing, after that the mixture starts to dry on the tinfoil, but I suppose it would depend how quickly the nail polish you use dries. If you were using a sheer nail polish and wanted to do two coats you would probably have to mix a second lot. I made do with one coat, here is the finished product...

A bit messy (I was just about to shower) but you get the idea! Click to enlarge.

Have any of you guys done this before? What are your favourite colour combinations?

Metro Chic is available at Sephora although I think this was limited edition. For people with no access to Sephora, you can probably find it on Ebay!

The Eyeko polish is available on their website, which offers free international shipping on any order. If you use my ambassador code (E2570) when you place your order, you will get a freebie thrown in, and if you spend over £10 and use that code, you'll get a free full sized item!
