My style inspiration
Monday, February 1, 2010 at 11:12AM This post has been requested a lot, and over the last year or so I've collected a (virtually) bulging folder of images on my mac. I have however, put off writing this post as the thought of all the image uploading and organising made my head hurt. LAZYTOWN!
I am trying not to neglect this blog, though, and since I made my very first 'Outfit of the day' video today on youtube (watch here) I thought this was the perfect time!
I'm going to talk a little bit (ok a lot) about what I like, particularly which celebrities I love style-wise. I have to say now I'm not going to be rambling on about Kate Moss or Cheryl Cole. Yes, they look good, but I am not a freak of nature like Kate with the ability to wear a sack and make it look like Ungaro and I do not have a footballer boyfriend with millions in the bank (I'm looking at you Ms Cole) so I'm more into people with a different sense of style, one thats more accessible to me and something a little bit different. So grab yourself a nice cup of tea and settle down, because this might get lengthy...
I'm going to kick it off with possibly my favourite person in the world. Okay maybe I'm coming on a bit strong, but I really do love Zooey Deschanel. A lot. I've been hooked since she played the slightly cuckoo sister to William Miller in Almost Famous (back when Kate Hudson was cool) I love her kooky (hate that word!) style and the way she never looks overdone. Her hair is to die for and she kind of rocks a 60's vibe most of the time without looking like she's going to a fancy dress party. I'm going to leave it there because I could talk about Zooey all day (as many of my nearest and dearest have discovered) and I know you don't have all day!
Next on my list is Jenny Lewis. I'm a huge fan of her solo albums and Rilo Kiley are one of my favourite bands. If you have seen them live you will know that not only does Jenny throw herself into every performance but she manages to look incredibly cool at the same time, even when sweaty. No mean feat. I'm incredibly jealous of her long red hair and vintage wardrobe. I actually watched an interview with her where she described her style as alternating between 'old while young' and 'straight off the horse' - the video interview didn't have many view on youtube at the time, and at a concert the following week we passed her a note onto the stage asking which category her outfit that night fell into. We got it on video and it always makes me chuckle when I watch it.
Up next is another red headed musician, Florence Welch of Florence & the machine. I love her dark hippy vibe and the flowers she always has draped all around the stage when she performs. Her clothes always have a costumey vibe to them and she has really striking features and amazing hair that just tops every outfit off.
A style inspiration would not be complete without an Olsen twin, and my favourite has to be Mary Kate, or MK as I like to call her. Such is my love for Mary Kate that I actually have a folder on my mac named 'Mary Kate Awesome' (see what I did there?) where I can save outfits I like. My favorite photo of MK has got to be the one with the blue scarf, and black cowboy boots. I have no idea why but everything just seems to work and she looks so effortless! I have loved her style in its many incarnations, from the surf vibe, to the grungey look. Her look is like visual marmite, you either love it or hate it, but to me she can do no wrong! A special mention has to go to Ashley, who very often looks more stylished, more polished, and some would say cleaner(!), but there's something about MK that pulls me in...
Next on my list is Chloe Sevigny. I first became fascinated with her when I watched the film 'Kids' back in the day (oh I sound old!) and I love her offbeat style. She never seems to have too many accessories but her outfits always make an impact for me! She always strikes me as being a little bit mysterious and too cool for school, certainly too cool for me!

Moving on, the next person I love is Nicola Roberts. For me, she's definitely the best member of Girls Aloud. I know everyone raves about Cheryl, and don't hate me, but I'm not that impressed. She always looks polished and pretty but there is something fun about Nicola and her approach to fashion that I love. I genuinely think she is so striking and pretty and have had many an argument with male friends who think she's 'a minger' just because she doesn't fit the mold. After watching her on 'The passions of Girls Aloud' when she designed a makeup range with Jelly Pong Pong for girls with fair complexions, I really warmed to her. Thank god she's not still slapping on the fake tan and layers of makeup to look like the other members of the group. Since she embraced the pale & ginger she's looked a trillion times better!
Another Brit I love is Pixie Lott. I won't ramble on, as I'm sure she's a favourite of many people. I think she's so fun, has a young, fresh style and the thing that makes her stand out to me is just how happy and comfortable with herself she always seems. You so often see photos of famous people looking downright miserable (yes, thats you Victoria Beckham) but she genuinely looks so happy in her own skin it makes whatever outfit she wears look brighter and prettier. It helps that she's gorgeous!
Next up, keeping it on a British theme again, is Diana Vickers. Most people either love or hate her voice (and her hand gestures!) but I'm a big fan of both her music and her style. She always looks like she just threw her outfits together and her style is very casual and fun. I'm also jealous of her golden locks! (I think I just have massive hair envy when it comes to everyone) I'm looking forward to seeing how her style evolves once her debut album is released and she gets a bit more publicity.
Last but not least, I have to give a special mention to Lourdes Leon aka mini Madonna. Obviously I wouldn't wear her outfits as she is pretty much half my age give or take a few years, but she always looks so cool! When was the last time you saw a 14 year old with that much confidence to experiment with fashion? I'm sure she's going to grow up with a style sense to rival her mothers, but in the meantime she's rocking some fun looks on the way out of the Kabbalah centre!
